Know what to buy.
See what to cut.
Work out your fabric yardage and backing layout before you cut.
What’s on your cutting table?
Quilt backing calculator
Plan backing panels, or check the size and fit of a separate batting layer.
Quilt binding calculator
Turn the quilt perimeter into a crossgrain strip count and yardage.
Quilt border calculator
Plan straight borders, cut widths and the size your quilt will become.
Fabric yardage calculator
Buy fabric for repeated rectangles, or count cuts from fabric you already have.
Half-square triangle calculator
Plan two-at-a-time HSTs, or switch to a separate two-stage hourglass recipe.
Quilt size calculator
Turn a block grid into a quilt size, or compare whole-block layouts around a target.
Flying geese calculator
Get starting squares, separate fabric quantities and trim sizes for standard 2:1 flying geese.

Before you measure
Lay the top flat. Measure through the middle without pulling the fabric, then check a second spot. If your quilt is going to a longarm quilter, ask for their backing allowance first.
Use the fabric width between the selvages. The width on the bolt label can include edges you won’t sew into the quilt.
